The gap between contracts is where many contractors either burn out or lose momentum. You do not need a manifesto — you need a few quiet boundaries: rules you decide in advance so you are not negotiating with yourself every morning.
Define “off” without disappearing
Block real rest in your diary the same way you would block a client workshop. That might be two days with no calls, or a week with email checked once daily. Tell agencies and trusted contacts a simple line: “I am back on [date] for new conversations.” Clarity reduces polite chasing and protects your recovery.
Keep the pipeline warm lightly
You can stay visible without being “always on.” Update your profile if anything material changed, refresh your availability window, and respond to high-fit messages in a batch once or twice a week. The goal is continuity, not performance — enough signal that you still exist in the market.
When to say yes to a quick call
Sometimes the right opportunity lands mid-break. Decide your criteria before the ping: rate band, tech fit, location. If it clears the bar, take the call; if not, a polite decline keeps your boundary intact and your reputation clean.
